INDIANAPOLIS — A few quick thoughts on the Indianapolis Colts' sixth-round pick:
The pick: Amarlo Herrera, linebacker, Georgia
My take: The addition of Herrera adds to the depth at inside linebacker. D'Qwell Jackson and Jerrell Freeman are the starters, but they’re thin at that position after that. Former Denver Broncos linebacker Nate Irving, who signed with the Colts during free agency, is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. The only other player at inside linebacker for the Colts is Henoc Muamba. Herrera is a tackling machine. He had a team-high 115 tackles last season.
Increasing his totals: Herrera only had 3.5 sacks in his career at Georgia, but he still found a way to cause some havoc in the backfield. His tackles-for-loss total increased each season. He had 10 tackles for loss to go with three sacks during his senior season.
Going defensive: The selection of Herrera gave the Colts five defensive players out of six picked on Saturday, which should make coach Chuck Pagano happy after his defensive unit has been inconsistent the past three seasons.
