This is the third in a three-part series of prove-it players on the Steelers’ defense during organized team activities. The first two installments featured outside linebacker Jarvis Jonesand cornerback Cortez Allen.
The ‘it’ in this case is fairly obvious – prove you’re a reliable NFL starter.
Player: Stephon Tuitt
Pedigree: Second-round pick in 2014 is considered a first-round talent after an All-American career at Notre Dame and with his mobility at 305 pounds.
Why he must prove it: Tuitt started four games last season and played average football, according to Pro Football Focus, which is respectable for a rookie, but Tuitt can do more. The Steelers want Tuitt to take ownership of the left end job but backups Cam Thomas and Clifton Geathers are capable options, if unspectacular.
Why he really must prove it: Despite no sweeping changes to the defense, the Steelers are in a transitional period on that side of the ball with coordinator Keith Butler and a retooled secondary. If Tuitt doesn’t build on his 17-tackle, one-sack season, that forces the Steelers into a heavier rotation on the line than they expected.
Why he will prove it: Most 300-plus-pounders don’t move like Tuitt, who has enough strength to shed blockers inside. Tuitt can get downfield in a hurry, too. He’s 22. He’s growing into the role. Cam Heyward, now a team leader, also recorded one sack in his first season. Heyward says Tuitt’s ceiling is “definitely” high. And his experience from starting a playoff game should inject confidence. “Work hard on the football field, keep my mouth closed off the football field,” Tuitt told the Associated Press.
