RICHMOND, Va. -- The Washington Redskins released safety Phillip Thomas, a move that is not surprising but a disappointing end to his time in Washington. The Redskins also waived rookie corner Tevin Mitchel with an injury designation to make room for two newly signed cornerbacks.
The Redskins signed corners Bryan McCann and DreQuan Hoskey, both of whom can help provide depth in camp with multiple players sidelined by injuries.
If Mitchel, a sixth-round pick, goes unclaimed off waivers, he reverts to the Redskins' injured reserve list. He can be brought back after passing through waivers. Considering he's out for the season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, it's hard to imagine another team claiming him.
Thomas' career in Washington was disappointing. He arrived as a fourth-round pick in 2013 with a reputation for making plays and for being a smart player. But injuries derailed his potential. He suffered a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot the first summer, requiring surgery and ending his season. Last summer, he was slowed by a hamstring injury and then an issue in his left foot. Thomas appeared in eight games last season, starting four. But he was not viewed as a future starter at the end of last season. Since that time, the Redskins added three safeties -- Dashon Goldson, Jeron Johnson and Kyshoen Jarrett.
The Redskins' secondary remains banged-up with corner Bashaud Breeland sidelined another month with a sprained MCL and David Amerson out with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. However, coach Jay Gruden said Amerson might be able to practice against Houston on Thursday.
