On Nov. 30, 2018, the Alabama High School Athletic Association ruled Maori Davenport ineligible to play her senior season of basketball at Charles Henderson High School in Troy, Alabama. Davenport had spent part of her summer leading the United States to a gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Mexico City. USA Basketball sent every member of that team a stipend check, and the organization has acknowledged failing to check with AHSAA prior to sending money to Davenport.
Davenport deposited the check, for $857.20. When USA Basketball realized its mistake, it contacted the Davenports on Nov. 26, and the family sent the money back on Nov. 28. The AHSAA determined Davenport broke its amateurism rules, which allow for a maximum payment of $250.
Davenport has been fighting to play since. Here are some key developments.
