Jaden Newman, along with boxer Claressa Shields, tennis star Victoria Duval and football phenom Sam Gordon, is part of the "Voices of the Future" panel at the espnW: Women + Sports Summit. Here are five things you need to know about the 11-year-old budding basketball star.
1. A video of a 9-year-old Newman dominating on her Downey Christian high school team in Orlando, Florida, went viral last spring, getting 1.2 million page views. A second highlight video published in February has been watched 1.8 million times. She is the starting point guard on her varsity team and averaged more than 30 points per game last season as a fifth-grader.
2. Newman bossed former NFL star Trevor Pryce in a dribbling contest in a 2014 episode of "Crowd Goes Wild."
3. Newman once scored 63 points in a game. One more detail: She was playing against boys on her AAU team.
4. Newman beat NBA MVP Stephen Curry in a 3-point contest shortly before the 2015 All-Star Game. Even better, Newman got Curry to sign a permission slip allowing her to miss school so she could beat him.
5. Jaden plays for her dad, coach Jamie Newman, on the Downey Christian varsity team. Her brother, Julian Newman, has also gained international fame for his basketball skills and has been featured in The New York Times and USA Today. Jaden and Jamie together were featured in People magazine.
