Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is undergoing tests in hospital after collapsing during a training session on Friday, the German club confirmed.
Kompany had been suffering with a viral infection that was affecting his legs over the past week, though he was on the sideline for Bayern's Champions League match with Arsenal on Wednesday.
Bayern said that Kompany, 40, collapsed while watching a training session for the club's reserve team on Friday and required medical care.
"Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care," the club said. "His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice."
The club's director of sport, Max Eberl, said Kompany would be given "all the time he needs."
"Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority," Eberl said in a statement. "We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.
"Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery."
Kompany was subdued and remained seated in Bayern's 6-1 win over Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Eberl said at the time that Kompany, who reportedly needed help to climb stairs, had been struggling with both the virus and a hip injury.
Ahead of the Arsenal game, assistant Aaron Danks assumed Kompany's training and media duties Tuesday.
"It has affected his legs at times and he's felt some pain," Danks said of Kompany on Tuesday.
"It's just a virus. The doctors, the experts, know way more than I do. The most important thing we've just encouraged is that he rests, he takes the time he needs, whatever that may be, however long that may be."
Following Wednesday's match, Kompany acknowledged he tried to push through the illness and failed to heed the signals from his body.
Bayern Munich, who are top of the German Bundesliga and level on points with Borussia Dortmund, next visit Freiburg on Sunday.
Kompany joined Bayern in 2024 from Burnley and has won the German league twice since then. Kompany's team also reached the Champions League semifinals and won the German Cup last season.
Among a raft of teams wishing Kompany well was Manchester City, where he was the long-time captain and won the Premier League four times.
"Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and Club legend, Vincent Kompany," City posted on X. "Get well soon, Vinny."
