East Bengal ended a 22-year wait to be crowned champions of India after a 2-1 win over Inter Kashi on the final day of the season gave them the Indian Super League title.
Eventually, East Bengal and their city rivals Mohun Bagan were only separated on goal difference. Bagan missed a glut of chances in their 2-1 win over SC Delhi. They needed to score six more goals to take the title from East Bengal, and could really have done, if not for glaring misses from the likes of Jason Cummings and Manvir Singh.
It began so well from a Bagan perspective though, as Alfred Planas scored a goal-of-the-season contender for Kashi against East Bengal in the 14th minute, with a stunning side-footed volley past Prabhsukhan Singh Gill.
East Bengal responded well to that, but Yousseff Ezzejjari missed a sitter of his own. The golden boot winner made up for that, though, as he scored the goal that calmed East Bengal nerves to bring them back level. It was a poor bit of goalkeeping from Shubham Dhas for Kashi, and Ezzejjari made him pay, before a stunning Bipin Singh cross 20 minutes later was turned home by Mohammed Basim Rashid to spark wild celebrations.
At that point, Bagan were trailing too, after Clarence Fernandes scored for SC Delhi against the run of play. Eventually Bagan did win thanks to goals from Manvir and Jamie Maclaren. Mumbai City FC also beat nine-man Punjab FC 2-0, with goals from Valpuia and Vikram Partap Singh. But eventually, it was East Bengal's day. They are the new champions of India.
