CINCINNATI -- Taylor Teagarden singled to center off Aroldis Chapman with two outs in the ninth inning to drive in Anthony Rizzo with the go-ahead run, and the Chicago Cubs posted their biggest comeback of the season -- erasing a 5-0 deficit to log a 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds and avoid a day-night doubleheader sweep.
How it happened: The Reds sent at least nine batters to the plate in one frame for the third time in the two games, but this time they didn’t stop at nine in the second inning. They added one, capitalizing on shortstop Starlin Castro's boot of a double-play ball to score two unearned runs while building a 5-0 lead and matching the largest inning against the Cubs this season. Not to be outdone, Chicago used 10 batters to score five runs in the top of the third, which was capped by Kris Bryant's pinch-hit, two-run double.
What it means: The Cubs finish their seven-game road trip against sub-.500 clubs 4-3 and improve to 5-5 in their past 10 games against teams below .500. Chicago isn't scheduled to face a winning team until Aug. 3 at Pittsburgh, after playing a combined 10 games against cellar-dwelling Philadelphia, Colorado and Milwaukee -- all of which went into Wednesday's games in last place in their respective National League divisions.
Key moment: Rizzo, who snapped an 0-for-15 slump with a seventh-inning double, singled with Dexter Fowler on second and one out in the ninth inning, but left fielder Marlon Byrd threw Fowler out at home and a replay review confirmed that catcher Brayan Pena did not violate the obstruction rules.
What’s next: The Cubs return home for a day off before opening a six-game homestand Friday against the Phillies. Lefty Jon Lester (5-8, 3.37 ERA), fresh off his 4-0 win on Saturday in Atlanta, is scheduled to start the 3:05 p.m. CT series opener against Phillies right-hander Jerome Williams (3-7, 6.43 ERA).
