LOS ANGELES -- The Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 behind Jake Arrieta’s first career no-hitter. Here’s a quick look at the game.
How it happened: Finally, it all came together for Cubs righty Arrieta after flirting with several no-hit bids over the past two seasons. He was dominant in striking out 12 while allowing one baserunner to reach second base. He threw 116 pitches and looked as dominant in the ninth inning -- he struck out the side -- as he did in the first. Kris Bryant hit a two-run home run in the first inning as the Cubs got to Dodgers starter Alex Wood for eight hits over six innings, but just those two runs. The Dodgers' first baserunner came in the third inning on a hard-hit ball by Kike Hernandez to Starlin Castro at second base. Castro booted it for an error. Arrieta walked Jimmy Rollins in the seventh, but those two would be the only ones to reach base off Arrieta.
What it means: With two Cy Young Award candidates in Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke watching from the other dugout, Arrieta may have vaulted to the top of the pack by lowering his ERA to 2.11 while posting his 17th win. He has thrown 14 consecutive quality starts, tying Greg Maddux for third most in Cubs history. It was Arrieta’s first career no-hitter and the first for the Cubs since Carlos Zambrano threw one in 2008. Overall, it’s the Cubs’ 14th in franchise history.
What’s next: The Cubs return home immediately after the game to open up a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. Kyle Hendricks (6-6, 4.11) takes on David Holmberg (1-4, 7.62).
