SALT LAKE CITY -- The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without backup point guard Matthew Dellavedova for the foreseeable future.
Dellavedova injured his left knee with 4:40 remaining in the fourth quarter of Cleveland's 101-92 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday, the team announced.
The second-year veteran was evaluated in Utah on Wednesday and will undergo further evaluation when the team returns home from its current three-game road trip on Saturday. Dellavedova sat out against the Utah Jazz and will also miss Friday's game against the Denver Nuggets at the very least.
"We want to go back to Cleveland and get some of our doctors to take a look at him and we'll be a lot smarter back in Ohio," Cavs coach David Blatt said before his team played the Jazz.
There is concern within the team that Dellavedova could have sprained the knee, ESPN.com has learned. A sprained knee could sideline Dellavedova anywhere from one to three weeks.
Blatt moved Dion Waiters from the starting lineup to assume backup point guard duties against the Jazz. Cleveland has one other point guard on its roster, Will Cherry, who was signed after the team cut A.J. Price last weekend.
"Next man up," Blatt said. "We have some different options and Delly's an important part of what we do -- certainly from a defensive standpoint, from an energy standpoint, his ability to back up Kyrie (Irving) and play off-guard as well. We're just going to have to figure it out on the fly here."
Dellavedova averaged 2.7 points and 2.3 assists in 19.7 minutes through the first three games of the season.
