Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Welington Castillo embraces the mentorship he has with fellow catcher Oscar Hernandez. While Castillo was sidelined with a hamstring injury, Hernandez started four consecutive games.
Castillo, who came into the league in 2010, has helped the rookie focus on acclimating to life as a big league catcher. Together, the catchers study the scouting reports to find their opposing batters’ weaknesses and to decide what pitches to throw when the pitcher is behind in the count.
Castillo talked to Sarah McLellan of The Arizona Republic about embracing his role as mentor:
- “I’ve been helping him a lot, and he’s been asking, too, so he’s really good. That’s what I’m here for, honestly. I don’t care if he’s a catcher; I’m a catcher. I don’t look at it like that. I like to help and do my best because this is a team game and anytime I need to help him, I will help him – not just him but anybody.”
