Through their first three games this season, the Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen has been an absolute disaster.
David Hernandez, believed to be the favorite for the closer role in spring training, allowed three runs without recording an out when tasked with protecting a one-run lead in the eighth inning on Opening Day against the Cincinnati Reds. Two days later, Dalier Hinojosa, believed to be second in line for the closer role, blew his save opportunity with a 2-1 lead entering the ninth inning.
So who will the Phillies turn to next to close out their games? It looks like right-hander Jeanmar Gomez will be given his chance, manager Pete Mackanin indicated to reporters, including Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
"We're auditioning," Mackanin said. "We've got to find out. It's a daily question. Why not Gomez? Let's see what he can do."
Gomez, a productive member of the Phillies' bullpen last season, pitched a clean inning in his first appearance this year. The 28-year-old has a 3.17 ERA in 140 games as a reliever, but he only has one major league save to his credit.
"He hasn't told me he's uncomfortable there," Mackanin said.
For his part, Gomez says he won't be fazed by the added pressure of closing things down.
"Any role, any inning they give me the opportunity to throw, I'll be ready," Gomez said. "No matter if it's seven, eight or nine or six or four. It doesn't matter. I don't think too much about it."
