The Texas Rangers may go with an in-house solution for their catching crisis, at least for the time being.
The club was thin behind the plate even before Robinson Chirinos suffered a broken right forearm and was placed on the 60-day disabled list over the weekend. Bryan Holaday, a career .246 hitter who was acquired from the Tigers near the end of spring training, is now the No. 1 catcher simply by default.
Brett Nicholas was called up from the minors to be the primary backup.
ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick tweets the Rangers are more likely to go with Holaday and Nicholas “rather than swing a deal for an impact catcher,” adding they could make a minor deal to add depth.
The Rangers were among the teams linked to the Brewers’ Jonathan Lucroy over the winter. Texas also expressed interest in the Padres’ Derek Norris during the offseason, but those talks reportedly stalled because of San Diego’s high asking price.
