The pitching-needy Oakland Athletics received bad news on Henderson Alvarez this weekend, as the right-hander left his rehab start with Triple-A Nashville an inning early on Sunday due to shoulder soreness, Matt Kawahara of the Sacramento Bee reports. Alvarez was set to meet with team doctors Monday night.
Alvarez, 26, underwent season-ending surgery as a member of the Miami Marlins last year. The Athletics signed him to a one-year contract this offseason knowing he would miss time, but a setback is obviously a tough blow to the club.
“We were looking forward to his return,” A's manager Bob Melvin said. “Chances are it’s going to be a little bit longer than we were hoping here.”
Athletics starters have posted an AL-worst 5.31 ERA as a group this season.
