LSU continued its push toward a truly memorable recruiting class this week. The Tigers added commitments from two more prospects on Wednesday, furthering their effort to cash in on what will be a particularly fertile class of 2016 recruits in Louisiana.
Both of Wednesday's commitments -- ESPN's No. 3 safety Eric Monroe and as-yet-unevaluated defensive end/linebacker Rahssan Thornton -- hail from Texas, however. Nonetheless, 10 of LSU's 17 commitments are Louisianans, and Les Miles' staff is reportedly in good shape with a number of the hottest prospects among in-state recruits.
Monroe and Thornton became LSU's sixth and seventh prospects to commit within the last two weeks, continuing a trend where they have largely padded their depth in the defensive front seven. Like another recent addition, No. 11 outside linebacker Erick Fowler, Thornton could play outside linebacker in college. So could recent commitmentAndre Anthony out of New Orleans.
ESPN currently lists LSU's 2016 class at No. 5 nationally, but Miles' staff is still in the early stages here. The Tigers are off to a great start with 12 ESPN 300 honorees among the 17 commitments, but there is potential for LSU's class to rank even higher.
Out of the top 10 prospects in Louisiana, six remain uncommitted. That includes the No. 5 overall prospect (offensive tackle Willie Allen), No. 8 (defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence) and four more in the Top 100. If LSU cleans up within its borders, signing the No. 1 class is a reasonable possibility.
