NEW YORK -- Catcher Kevin Plawecki left the home clubhouse at Citi Field after his New York Mets debut with the baseball from his first major league hit as well as with the lineup card. It will be a game worth remembering.
Plawecki went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the Mets ran their winning streak to nine games with a 7-1 win against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.
"I'm just happy to have the first one out of the way and happy that it ended up the way it did, and most importantly come out with a win," Plawecki said.
Facing right-hander Trevor Cahill, Plawecki got ahead in the count, 2-0, in his first at-bat before lining out to first base. He then singled, popped out and singled again.
"On the hitting side of things, I felt comfortable after that first at-bat," Plawecki said. "I was a little bit nervous. So I was just happy to make contact, to be honest. After that, I was really excited and just got back to playing baseball."
Plawecki threw out Andrelton Simmons trying to take second base to end the top of the sixth inning, although Plawecki noted that the bounced pitch getting away from him was what prompted Simmons to take off in the first place.
"I kind of made a mistake and made up for it," Plawecki said. "I was just happy to make a good throw and we were able to get out of it."
Plawecki had Travis d'Arnaud on the bench offering advice during the game. D'Arnaud, whose fractured right hand paved the way for Plawecki's call-up, had taken Plawecki out to dinner on Monday to prep the rookie for his major league debut.
"We talked on and off throughout the game, especially when some other relievers were coming in -- kind of how he had been handling those guys in their relief roles," Plawecki said.
Said d'Arnaud: "Him and I became really close friends in spring training. ... He did a tremendous job. I'm so happy for him. So happy for him."
