BREWERS SHORT HOPS
Shortstop/leadoff hitter Jean Segura landed on the disabled list Thursday with a fractured right pinkie. Switch-hitting Luis Sardinas, who turns 22 on Saturday, was promoted from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Sardinas was acquired in a Jan. 19 trade that sent Yovani Gallardo to the Texas Rangers. Segura jammed the finger on a headfirst slide Tuesday. He was hitting .262 with two homers and 12 RBIs and had six steals in 33 games.
Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, while still active, has missed six straight games with a back injury. He expects to return for Friday’s series opener against the Mets.
Craig Counsell signed a three-year contract to replace the fired Ron Roenicke as manager on May 4. The Brewers had a 7-18 record at the time of Roenicke’s dismissal. Counsell, 44, had not previously managed or coached. He had been serving as a special assistant to general manager Doug Melvin. Counsell played 16 major league seasons as an infielder, including in 2004 and from 2007 through ’11 with the Brewers.
Juan Centeno, who was claimed off waivers from the Mets on Oct. 31, is serving as Milwaukee’s backup catcher. Centeno is hitless in nine at-bats this season. He is up with Jonathan Lucroy on the DL with a fractured left toe. Minus Lucroy, Martin Maldonado has served as the primary catcher.
Two-time All-Star center fielder Carlos Gomez returned from the DL on May 2. He had been sidelined with a strained right hamstring. Gomez, a close friend of Juan Lagares, more recently missed three games with a sore right hip.
Closer Francisco Rodriguez re-signed with Milwaukee for two years, $13 million on March 14. K-Rod has 355 career saves, which places him 10th all time in MLB. Troy Percival ranks ninth, with 358.
Kyle Lohse lasted five innings in each of his past two starts. He has thrown 104 and 106 pitches, respectively, in those appearances.
Milwaukee’s 12-23 record is the worst in the majors. It is a half-game worse than the Philadelphia Phillies.
