NEW YORK -- Slugger Carlos Gonzalez had some high praise for New York Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom after the ace blanked the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.
"deGrom is the best pitcher in the game, hands down," Gonzalez told Denver reporters after deGrom limited the Rockies to two hits in seven innings. "I've faced a lot of good pitchers, but his stuff is the best I've seen. His fastball jumps. He throws 98. His changeup is also good. His slider has a lot of angle to it. And he has a good curveball. When you get to two strikes with a guy like him, you don't even know what to look for."
DeGrom is 8-2 with a 1.46 ERA in his past 15 starts. Since May 16, that is the lowest ERA in the majors (minimum 50 innings).
This season, deGrom's 2.03 ERA ranks second in the majors, trailing only the Dodgers' Zack Greinke (1.65).
