PHILADELPHIA -- Remember when general manager Sandy Alderson set a goal of 90 wins?
Well, one season later, the New York Mets actually are on pace for that total.
After beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-4, on Wednesday night, the Mets improved to 70-56. That's a .556 winning percentage, which projects precisely to 90-72.
Manager Terry Collins said he did not foresee the Mets being on pace for that type of record a month ago.
After blowing a six-run lead to the San Diego Padres on July 30, the Mets had dipped to 52-50 and were three games behind the Washington Nationals. Now, the Mets own a 6 1/2-game lead atop the National League East.
"With the way some of the things were going, we certainly didn't think that," Collins said. “But we're not looking at that. We're looking at trying to win our division and play good baseball for the next month.”
