NEW YORK -- After a deflating late-inning defeat Tuesday, the New York Mets have a quick turnaround.
Jacob deGrom (3-1, 2.81 ERA) opposes White Sox right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (0-1, 4.50) at 1:10 p.m. ET in Wednesday’s rubber game.
WEDNESDAY’S NEWS REPORTS:
Hansel Robles surrendered a two-run homer to Tyler Saladino in what became a three-run eighth and the White Sox snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 6-4 win against the Mets on Tuesday. Robles was working the eighth because Jeurys Familia was unavailable after throwing 67 pitches in three games over the previous four days. Addison Reed was being held back for the ninth. Steven Matz lasted only 5 2/3 innings in his shortest start since his season debut, but he departed with a 4-3 lead. Matz had a streak of seven straight starts earning a win snapped when Robles forfeited the lead. As a result, Frank Viola’s franchise-record nine straight starts with a win, which spanned the 1989 and ’90 seasons, is safe. Noah Syndergaard contributed a scoreless seventh inning while topping out at 101 mph. He was picking up some extra work after getting ejected 33 pitches into Saturday’s game. Syndergaard will start Friday in Miami. Neil Walker belted a two-run homer that staked the Mets to a 4-0 lead against Mat Latos in the third inning. Walker now has 13 homers. That’s a total he did not reach until Aug. 20 last season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets had been 28-0 when leading after seven innings. David Wright temporarily dodged the disabled list, but he is not out of the woods yet. Wright received an anti-inflammatory injection in his neck on Tuesday to try to address a herniated disk. If he cannot play on Friday, when the Mets open a series in Miami, the Mets likely will place the captain on the DL. Terry Collins acknowledged it is difficult watching a diminished Wright. With Wright still active but idle, the Mets instead demoted Eric Campbell to Triple-A Las Vegas to create the roster spot for the activation of James Loney. Loney went 0-for-4, committed an error and had another misplay in his Mets debut on Tuesday. The Mets designated Triple-A reliever Jeff Walters for assignment in order to free a 40-man roster spot for Loney. Mets owners owe the first repayment of profits from Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme on Wednesday. However, the Wilpon family worked out a deal with the trustee recovering funds for victims. The Wilpons now owe $16 million in the current payment. They will defer other money owed -- as much as $45 million -- at 3.5 percent interest. Read more in the Times and Newsday.

Starting pitcher Josh Prevost was struck in the side of the head with a seventh-inning comebacker and was forced to depart St. Lucie’s 4-0 loss at Fort Myers. Prevost, a Seton Hall product, walked off the field under his own power. Zack Thornton allowed four runs in relief and Reno beat Las Vegas, 10-6. Derrik Gibson had four of Binghamton’s 18 hits in an 11-2 win against Erie. Kevin Kaczmarski delivered a go-ahead three-run double in Columbia’s 4-3 win against Rome.
