PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Second baseman Daniel Murphy received a cortisone injection in his right side during an examination with team doctors Tuesday in Manhattan, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com.
Murphy had been dispatched to the Hospital for Special Surgery after feeling a "subtle tug" in camp. He was diagnosed by trainers with an intercostal muscle injury, Sandy Alderson said Monday.
Alderson had speculated that a cortisone injection may occur. That was the route team doctors took when David Wright suffered a similar injury last spring training.
Murphy, before departing Mets camp, hoped the injury would only sideline him a week to 10 days.
