NEW YORK -- Left-hander Scott Rice, who has been sidelined since June 23 at Triple-A Las Vegas, has been diagnosed with a bone spur in his pitching elbow, a source told ESPNNewYork.com.
Rice likely will wait several days and then determine if he can tolerate pitching through the spur. If he cannot, he could proceed with surgery to remove it.
That is not a significant procedure, but it could knock out Rice for much of the remainder of this season.
Sandy Alderson said there is no suspected ligament damage.
