PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The drama involving where Matt Harvey rehabbed from Tommy John surgery will not be repeated with Zack Wheeler.
Once the New York Mets break camp, Wheeler plans to spend six weeks at home in Georgia, since he needs to be idle during that time anyway. He then mostly will rehab at the Mets' complex in Port St. Lucie, except for sporadic visits to New York to be examined by team doctors. Wheeler does plan to visit the team when they are in Atlanta, as well as during the season when he can drive from Port St. Lucie to Miami.
Wheeler underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. Team doctor David Altchek performed the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. The procedure involved transplanting a ligament from Wheeler's right wrist.
Wheeler is targeting a June 2016 return to the majors.
Harvey wanted to rehab in New York because he makes his year-round home in Manhattan and enjoys the city. He also wanted to be around the team. The team preferred Harvey rehab in Florida, but could not compel him to do so. Wheeler has no such New York ties.
