By the Numbers
• Jeter had four five-hit games in his career, two came against the Rays (more on one of them below). He’s the only player with multiple five-hit games against the Rays.
• Jeter’s 316 hits against the Rays are more than 100 more than the player with the next-most, Alex Rodriguez has 212. He also has the most games played and runs scored against franchise.
• Jeter is one of three players to have 30 hits against the Rays in a season. He did so in 2004. Shannon Stewart had 30 in 2001 and Miguel Tejada had 30 in 2006.
• Jeter’s numbers versus the Rays at Yankee Stadium are vastly different from those at Tropicana Field.
• Jeter had a .321/.381/.477 slashline against the Rays in home games, .276/.340/.376 on the road
• Jeter had eight go-ahead plate appearances against the Rays in the seventh inning or later, the most of any player. That’s his second-most against any team. He had 10 against the Red Sox.
• Jeter’s longest hitting streak against the Rays is a 20-gamer spanning the 2004 and 2005 seasons, during which he hit .424 with 36 hits. It’s the longest hit streak by a Yankees player against the Rays (he has the second-longest too, 15 games from 2006 to 2007) and is tied with Edgar Martinez for the fourth-longest by anyone. Ivan Rodriguez has the longest -- a 27-gamer from 1998 to 2000.
• Jeter has 3,065 hits since 1998, the first season of the Rays franchise. In that span, Rays' shortstops have 2,593 hits, the fewest of any AL team and the second-fewest in MLB ahead of only the Padres.
• In 2004 he also had 11 doubles against Tampa, the most he's collected against any team in a season and the most by any player in a single season vs. them.
• Jeter has scored five runs in a game once in his career -- on June 21, 2005 against the Rays. He had five hits in that game, too, becoming just the third Yankee in the last 100 years with at least five hits and five runs in a game. The others are Babe Ruth, who did it in 1926 against the Senators, and Rodriguez, who did it also in 2005 against the Rays.
• Jeter has grounded into 35 double plays against Rays, his most against any team and the most by any player against the franchise.
They Said It
"Derek has been the benchmark for character and class in a baseball uniform. He has inspired a generation to play baseball the way it was meant to be played. It has been an honor to play against him."
Rays third baseman Evan Longoria upon hearing Jeter's retirement announcement
