The Washington Nationals face the Atlanta Braves Sunday and will attempt to complete their first four-game sweep of the season.
How hot has first baseman Ryan Zimmerman been? So hot that if he sustained a cut, lava would ooze out of his skin. Nevertheless, Zimmerman (1.223 OPS in last 18 games) is not in the lineup Sunday. He was originally penciled in, but then was scratched. The Nationals say it’s just your normal, garden-variety day off. Tyler Moore moves into the lineup at first base, and he’ll bat eighth. Yunel Escobar is hitting in Zimmerman’s usual cleanup spot.
Down below are Sunday's complete lineups. But first, a little Nats numerology to get the old cranium cranking on a long holiday weekend:
1 – MLB rank of the Nationals offense in on-base percentage (.384) since Aug. 18.
2 – Number of hits allowed in 5 2/3 innings by Braves lefty Manny Banuelos in his big-league debut against the Nationals on July 2. Banuelos, who’s 1-3 with a 1.82 WHIP since then and gets the start on Sunday, had seven strikeouts and no walks against the Nats.
3 – Number of consecutive games not started by Michael A. Taylor, who’s been dealing with a sore knee since crashing into the outfield wall last weekend. Taylor is back in the lineup Sunday in center field. According to FanGraphs, Taylor boasts a UZR/150 (a measurement of range) of 13.6. That’s second among NL center fielders, behind only Cincinnati’s Billy Hamilton.
4 – Number of consecutive wins by the Nats, their longest streak since they ripped off eight in a row from June 19-28.
5 – Number of players in MLB history with 30 home runs and 100 walks in a season at age 22 or younger: Bryce Harper, Eddie Matthews, Ted Williams, Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx. Harper is the first player in 61 years to do it.
6 – Number of walks issues by rookie Joe Ross in his last start. The six free passes were a career high and just two fewer than the total amount of walks he allowed in six August starts.
7 – Number of times, over his past six games combined, Harper has failed to reach base via hit or walk. During that stretch, he has 10 walks and a slash line of .538/.720/1.231.
8 – Where Esocbar, who’s hitting .312 entering Sunday, ranks among NL batting average leaders.
9 – Number of consecutive home wins for the Nationals against the Braves, a club record (from 2005-present) for a home streak against a divisional rival.
10 – Number of home runs hit by Ian Desmond since the All-Star break, second most on the team behind Ryan Zimmerman (11).
