BOSTON -- Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval left Saturday's 11th-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays with tightness in his right quad and is day-to-day, manager John Farrell said.
When he was removed after the sixth inning, Sandoval was 2-for-3 with two RBIs on the day, making him 8-for-23 with six RBIs since he sat out two games against the Oakland A's last weekend. He was replaced at third by infielder Jeff Bianchi.
"We had to get him off his feet. He's day-to-day. We'll check in with him when he gets here tomorrow," Farrell said in his postgame news conference. "It's undecided when he'll return."
Sandoval's final appearance of the game was striking out swinging in the bottom of the sixth. Farrell wouldn't say whether something in that particular at-bat sparked the decision.
"There wasn't one event. It was gradual tightness as the game wore on," Farrell said. "I felt as he was swinging that final at-bat, his front right is [what] he's hitting against, and he felt the tightness as he continued on. It was precautionary, got him out of there."
