Indiana State rallies past Northern Iowa 20-19
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Wide receiver Chris O'Leary threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Gary Owens on a trick play with 2:12 remaining and Indiana State held off Northern Iowa 20-19 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams Saturday.
The Sycamores (4-1, 1-0) led 14-0 early, but gave up 19 straight points before breaking the drought on Owens' score. Mike Perish's pass was intercepted on the two-point try.
Sawyer Kollmorgen drove Northern Iowa (2-3, 0-1) down to the Sycamore 36, but Michael Schmadeke's 53-yard field goal attempt was short.
Buck Logan and Perish each had first-quarter rushing touchdowns for Indiana State. Owens had six receptions for 79 yards.
Kollmorgen had a 5-yard touchdown run and Schmadeke kicked four field goals with a long of 48 yards. Schmadeke's 30-yarder gave Northern Iowa its first lead and a 31-yarder made it 19-14 with 14:48 left.
David Johnson had 127 yards rushing for the Panthers.
