Portland State defeats Eastern Washington 34-31
CHENEY, Wash. -- David Jones rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns and Alex Kuresa threw for two more scores to lead Portland State to a 34-31 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday.
Portland State (9-2, 6-2 Big Sky), which started the season with an upset 80 miles away at Washington State, probably earned a berth in the FCS playoffs while ending a three-year playoff run for the Eagles (6-5, 5-3).
The Vikings opened the second half with Kuresa's 7-yard TD pass to Josh Kraght and then receiver Thomas Carter III found Cam Sommer for a 5-yard score on a trick play, making it 27-17.
The teams traded fourth quarter touchdowns -- Portland State's after Eastern's fourth turnover and before Todd Raynes' 35-yard fumble return pulled the Eagles within 34-31. However, the Vikings ran out the clock.
Eastern's Cooper Kupp finished with eight catches for 136 yards and a 78-yard TD, which pushed him pass Jerry Rice for second in FCS career yards with 4,764.
