Sam Houston St. takes early lead, holds off SE La. 28-25
HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Ty Brock threw for 320 yards with Dee Bowens hauling in eight passes for 155 yards and a score and Kyran Jackson ran for three touchdowns as Sam Houston State got past Southeastern Louisiana 28-25 on Saturday afternoon.
The victory keeps the Bearkats (5-3, 4-2) in the hunt for the Southland Conference title as every team has dropped at least one game.
SHSU struck early when Brock hit Bowens on a 64-yard scoring strike on the third play of the game. Jackson then ran it in from the 2 for a 14-0 lead. Southeastern Louisiana (3-6, 3-4) closed to 14-10 at the break. Jackson bulled across from the 2 in the third and broke for an 11-yard score early in the fourth for a 28-10 lead.
The Lions closed to 28-25 after Devonte Williams and Chason Virgil both crashed in from the 1. Virgil passed to Bransen Schwebel for a two-point conversion with 2:59 remaining for the final score.
Virgil threw for 274 yards and a score but was picked off twice.
