Washington's running back depth has taken a significant hit as starter Quaid Carr and backup Jayden Limar both will miss extended time with injuries sustained in Sunday's win against Washington State.
Coach Jedd Fisch said Monday that Carr, who started the Apple Cup game and had 47 rushing yards and a touchdown on a team-high 12 carries, will undergo surgery on his hand. He sustained the injury in the second quarter Sunday. Limar, a transfer from Oregon, had 28 rushing yards on five carries against WSU but sustained an elbow injury.
Fisch said he doesn't know if Carr or Limar's injuries are season-ending, but added, "I know they're not going to be back for a while."
Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. led Washington in rushing with 61 yards against Washington State. Fisch said senior Trey Cooley, a transfer from Troy who had four carries, and freshman Brian Bonner will handle most of the running back duties in the immediate future.
Asked about his concern level with running back depth, Fisch replied, "Very."
"We've got seven, so I'm glad we made a decision to bring in Trey Cooley, because you always have to be aware of the running back room," Fisch said. "First time in six years [as a head coach] that I've had two pretty significant injuries in the same room."
Washington hosts Utah State and Eastern Washington the next two weeks before opening Big Ten play at home against Minnesota on Sept. 26.
