LINCOLN, Neb. -- Indiana coach Curt Cignetti was still clutching a white towel in one hand as he stepped up to the podium Saturday afternoon.
Nebraska made his No. 7 Hoosiers sweat with three dominant quarters that built up to a double-digit lead early in the fourth quarter. But when it was time to win, the defending national champions never flinched.
Indiana stared down an 11-point deficit against an undefeated foe and responded with two long passing touchdowns and four fourth-quarter stops for a 20-17 triumph that left Cignetti far more relieved than frustrated.
"I'm not sure it's completely sunk in -- or it's starting to -- that we won," Cignetti said, "because it took everything the players and coaches had in that one to find a way to overcome."
The Hoosiers have won 22 consecutive games, and Cignetti improved his regular-season record to 29-1 since arriving in Bloomington. There haven't been many close calls along the way, and this program hadn't trailed in any game since last year's Big Ten championship bout with Ohio State.
But trailing 10-3 at halftime in a battle that the Huskers had thoroughly controlled, Cignetti knew he was about to find out if this year's squad had the poise necessary to play to its standard.
"You've got to have an indomitable will, man," Cignetti said. "A will that cannot be defeated or subdued. And you've got to be resilient. You have the ability to overcome the unexpected. No matter how bad it gets, you never let anxiety, frustration enter your mindset. You're going to find a way. It's just a matter of time."
The Huskers kept Indiana's offense out of rhythm and off the field in the first half, limiting the Hoosiers to 16 plays over less than eight minutes of possession. The Hoosiers had a top-10 rushing offense in the FBS entering the day but never got rolling on the ground, with running backs Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe Jr. combining for 41 yards on 17 carries.
At halftime, Cignetti told his players that good teams find a way to win games such as these. Quarterback Josh Hoover was struck by his calm demeanor and confidence in the locker room amid a start that hadn't gone according to plan.
"He came over to me and said, 'Are you having fun yet?'" Hoover said of Cignetti.
When Nebraska quarterback Anthony Colandrea cut through the defense on a third-down rush for a 39-yard touchdown and made it 17-6 with 12:01 remaining, the Hoosiers were facing their biggest deficit they had faced since their last loss, the first-round College Football Playoff exit against Notre Dame in 2024.
Hoover and wide receiver Nick Marsh weren't part of those teams. The coveted transfers haven't been in many high-pressure situations with this squad. But the moment wasn't too much for them Saturday.
On Indiana's next offensive play, Hoover hit Marsh on a post route, and the receiver dashed past Nebraska's secondary for a 75-yard touchdown.
Indiana's defense delivered a quick stop on a four-play drive and got the ball back to Hoover with just over nine minutes left. Five plays later, the Hoosiers quickly lined up for a fourth-and-1 and faked an inside run. Marsh snuck behind the Huskers' defense, and Hoover found him for an easy 44-yard score to finally grab the lead.
Hoover put up 263 passing yards on just 12 completions, connecting with Marsh six times for 187 yards, and still hasn't thrown an interception through six games this season.
The Hoosiers' defense should've been worn down from playing 83 snaps but didn't relent, finishing the job from there by stopping Colandrea twice on fourth down.
Under Cignetti, the Hoosiers are 7-0 in games decided by one score. They've already had to pull off two of them this season, after opening Big Ten play with a 29-23 win over Northwestern.
"This is a great building block for this defense, this offense and this team," linebacker Isaiah Jones said. "You want to win these big games. You want to be down. You want to feel what it's like when you touch the stove, feel when the pressure's on. I think that builds character, that builds relentless trust in your team."
"A win like that has a lot of value," Cignetti said.
Cignetti knows there will be plenty to critique and fix when he digs into the tape. His coaches and players are aware of what they're up against next week against No. 5 Ohio State.
They weren't worried afterward about whether they'll be good enough to beat the Buckeyes. All that mattered Saturday was survival.
"No matter how it was going to get done, whether it's pretty or not," Jones said, "we were going to walk out of Lincoln, Nebraska, with a win."
