History will be made when the 2026 WNBA Finals between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream tips off this Saturday.
For the first time in league history, the Finals will feature three players and one executive with African connections, the highest African representation in the championship series dating to the league's inaugural season in 1997.
Ghanaian-American general manager Ohemaa Nyanin and Canadian forward Laeticia Amihere, whose parents are Ghanaian, represent Golden State, while on the other side, Atlanta have Mali international Sika Kone and Kenyan center Madina Okot.
The four surpass the previous high of three from 2008, when players Olayinka Sanni (Detroit Shock) and Morenike Atunrase (San Antonio Silver Stars) were on opposing teams, with Mike Ekanem serving as strength and conditioning coach for San Antonio.
All three are of Nigerian heritage, and Sanni even represented Nigeria, winning two silver medals and one bronze across three All Africa Games tournaments.
This year's Finals, which begin Saturday in San Francisco, brings together two franchises seeking their first WNBA championship, with Nyanin's leadership of Golden State's basketball operations introducing an executive dimension to Africa's history in the league.
Appointed the Valkyries' inaugural general manager in May 2024, Nyanin became the first executive of African origin in the WNBA, and has overseen one of the fastest rises by an expansion franchise in WNBA history.
Under her leadership, Golden State became the first WNBA expansion team to qualify for the playoffs in their inaugural season in 2025 and followed that by reaching the Finals in only their second season, another expansion franchise record.
The Valkyries finished the 2026 regular season 32-12 before advancing through the playoffs, including a semifinal victory over defending champion Las Vegas Aces.
Nyanin, who previously served as assistant general manager of the New York Liberty team that reached the 2023 Finals, finished third in voting for the WNBA's 2026 Executive of the Year award.
Golden State's success has also been accompanied by record commercial growth. The franchise became the first professional women's sports team to surpass $100 million in annual revenue and topped the WNBA's franchise valuation rankings at about $1 billion, according to May 2026 estimates by CNBC.
The Valkyries also sold out all 44 regular-season home games across their first two seasons, extending their sellout streak through the playoffs.
Although the commercial achievements fall under the wider franchise leadership, Nyanin has been responsible for constructing the roster that has taken Golden State to the championship series in only their second year, a remarkable accomplishment.
Amihere, who was born in Canada to Ghanaian parents, is one member of that roster. The 6-foot-4 forward won the NCAA championship with South Carolina in 2022, helping coach Dawn Staley's Gamecocks defeat Connecticut in the title game. She made history as a teenager in 2017 when, at 15, she became the first Canadian woman to dunk in a competitive game.
The forward was selected eighth overall by Atlanta Dream in the 2023 WNBA draft and has represented Canada at the Olympic Games, including Tokyo in 2021 and Paris in 2024. Her move to Golden State has now brought her to the WNBA Finals for the first time, adding another milestone to a career that has included college and international basketball success.
On the other side of the floor, Atlanta's African representation comes through two players who have followed different routes to the WNBA.
Kone is an established Mali international who developed through one of Africa's most successful women's basketball programs. She was named MVP of the 2021 FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup, after leading Mali to a fourth-place finish, the best result by an African team in the tournament's history.
The now 24-year-old averaged 19.7 points and 14.8 rebounds during that competition and was subsequently selected by New York Liberty with the 29th overall pick in the 2022 WNBA draft.
She has also represented Mali at senior level, including at the Women's AfroBasket, where the country has remained one of the leading challengers to Nigeria's continental dominance.
Her appearance on Atlanta's Finals roster continues Mali's history in the championship series. Hamchetou Maiga-Ba won the championship with Sacramento Monarchs in 2005 and returned to the Finals the following year, when Sacramento lost to Detroit Shock.
Okot, meanwhile, has emerged as Kenya's most prominent women's basketball export. The 6-foot-6 center began playing basketball at 16 after initially pursuing volleyball in Kenya, before moving to the United States and establishing herself in college basketball.
She averaged 11.3 points and 9.6 rebounds at Mississippi State during the 2024-25 season before transferring to South Carolina, where she helped the Gamecocks reach the NCAA championship game in 2026. Okot averaged 12.8 points and 10.6 rebounds in her final college season, recording 22 double-doubles.
Atlanta selected her with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 WNBA draft, making her the first Kenyan player selected in the first round, and only the third in league history, following Josephine Owino, a third-round selection in 2009, and Kenyan-American Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who was drafted in the second round in 2022.
Such is the huge influence that Okot has become in Kenya, that the country's President William Ruto came to watch her play in Atlanta's 83-65 victory over New York Liberty in September.
Ruto, who was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, attended the game with First Lady Rachel Ruto, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum and representatives of NBA Africa. Afterward, Ruto and his wife met Okot on the court, took photographs and spoke with her in Swahili.
In her rookie season, she averaged 5.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 42 regular-season appearances as the Dream returned to the Finals for the first time since 2013.
The presence of the four African-connected figures continues a history dating to the early years of the WNBA. In 2001, just four years after the first Finals, DR Congo's Mwadi Mabika helped the Los Angeles Sparks defeat Charlotte Sting, whose roster included another African, Mozambique's Clarisse Machanguana. Both became the first players of African origin to appear in the Finals.
Mabika returned to the Finals to win a second championship with Los Angeles in 2002, this time against New York Liberty and fellow Congolese player Bernadette Ngoyisa Mudju. But a year later, she was on the other side, as Senegal's Astou Ndiaye-Diatta won the championship with Detroit Shock, defeating Mabika and the Sparks.
Those three consecutive Finals established an early precedent for African-born players appearing on opposing teams in the championship series. In total, players of African origin have been in 15 of the league's 29 previous Finals, with 16 distinct players and 22 total player appearances.
Nigeria, as expected, have had more players in WNBA Finals roster than any other African country, with five including Sanni, Natalia Achonwa, Ogwumike, Liz Cambage and Ezi Magbegor.
Los Angeles have also won more championships with African-connected players than any other franchise, claiming three through Mabika's two titles and Nigerian-American forward Ogwumike's championship in 2016.
Ogwumike, who won the league's MVP award that season, scored the decisive basket in Game 5 against Minnesota Lynx and returned to the Finals in 2017, but was second time unlucky when Los Angeles lost the title to Minnesota.
Mabika remains the most successful African-born player in league history, with two titles from three Finals appearances. Eight players of African origin have been WNBA champions, for a total of nine titles.
These include Seattle Storm's Magbegor, whose family has Nigerian roots, in 2020; Senegal-born Astou Ndour-Fall with Chicago Sky in 2021; and Nyara Sabally, whose father is Gambian, with New York Liberty in 2024, along with Hamchetou Maiga-Ba, and Olayinka Sanni.
The African connection also extended beyond the playing roster. Ekanem's involvement with San Antonio in 2008 helped establish the previous high for African representation in a Finals series, while Nigerian origin athletic trainer Michelle Anumba was part of the Las Vegas Aces' back-to-back championship teams in 2022 and 2023.
This year's championship series adds the front office into that history, with Nyanin overseeing the basketball operations of a Golden State team attempting to win a title in only their second season.
Atlanta, who have lost three previous Finals appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2013, are hoping to heal from the trauma of those losses by putting the memory behind them to claim their first championship in franchise history.
The series opens on Saturday at Chase Center, with one franchise guaranteed to win its first WNBA title. But more importantly for Africa, whichever team wins that first chip, there will be at least two Africans on the podium when that final buzzer goes.
