Here are the updated rest-of-season points rankings for this week.
Point guard
Dennis Smith Jr. has had up-and-down games as a member of the New York Knicks, but he should get plenty of opportunity down the stretch. The Knicks are currently starting two rookies and three sophomores as part of their extended youth movement, and Smith is clearly settling in as the point guard of the future. He is coming off a 19-point, 13-assist performance against the San Antonio Spurs and is averaging 17.1 PPG, 7.0 APG, 2.9 RPG, 1.9 SPG and 1.0 3PG during his past eight outings.
Reggie Jackson has quietly been on an extended surge, averaging 20.3 PPG (51.1 FG%, 94.1 FT%), 5.7 APG, 2.5 RPG and 2.7 3PG during his past 10 games to move up the rankings list.
Shooting guard
Jrue Holiday slides in the rankings this week on the report that he would see limited minutes down the stretch. In the game after that announcement, Holiday played only 25 minutes. However, in his last game, he got his usual 33 minutes and responded with 27 points and seven assists. If he keeps getting big minutes, expect Holiday to move right back up the rankings next week.
Small forward
The Los Angeles Lakers are currently on the outside looking in for the playoffs, and the pressure is on for them to get in. LeBron James has already stated that he's now in playoff mode, which suggests that he should be stuffing box scores for the remainder of the season.
Power forward
Lauri Markkanen is playing like a future first-round fantasy pick, averaging 26.5 PPG (49.0 FG%, 92.6 FT%), 12.5 RPG, 2.8 3PG and 2.5 APG during his past eight games. He's accelerating through the end of his second NBA season, and if this continues, then he should keep moving up the ranks moving forward.
Anthony Davis is on a minutes restriction and skipping the second half of back-to-backs right now, and the specter of him sitting for the rest of the season will hang over him moving forward. His drop in the rankings is precipitous, but it may still be a bit conservative, as he's very difficult to rely on.
Julius Randle is now the most consistent producer for the New Orleans Pelicans, with a consistent floor and the upside to explode when Davis sits. Cheick Diallo has sneaked in as the third big man of interest in New Orleans ahead of Jahlil Okafor, with back-to-back double-doubles over the weekend.
Center
Jonas Valanciunas has been battling with Ivan Rabb for minutes in Memphis, but with Jaren Jackson Jr. injured, there appears to be room for both of them now. Valanciunas is averaging 20.0 PPG (59.1 FG%), 9.3 RPG, 2.7 APG and 1.0 BPG in 24.7 MPG during his three games with the Grizzlies. Rabb almost fell out of the rotation during the first couple of games of the Valanciunas era but has responded with a solid 11.5 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 3.5 APG in 24.0 MPG during his past two games with Jackson out.
