Tony Finau leads the PGA Tour in driving distance. After the Dean & DeLuca Invitational, he leads in best apology, too.
During the third round on Saturday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, a shot off the club of the 26-year-old Finau hit fan Elisa Butler in the head, leaving her bloodied and needing stitches.
The typical response from a PGA Tour pro might be an autographed golf glove, sometimes with a few bucks hidden inside.
Finau did one better.
He showed up at Butler's house, according to her Instagram account and confirmed by the PGA Tour, with flowers, along with a "get well soon" card and a box of chocolates.
Her Instagram hashtags summed up her situation: #iforgiveyou #prettyawesomestory#FOOOOREE #ouch #classact
As for the tournament, Finau finished in the middle of the pack at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational.
It came as no surprise that Finau would do something like this for the injured fan. After his T-10 finish at the 2015 PGA Championship, Finau -- who made $243,000 that week -- was sitting in a middle seat in coach on a flight back from Whistling Straits. I had the aisle seat, and he let his wife have the window spot with their young baby on their laps.
That might not seem like a big deal, except that Finau is 6-foot-4, a body frame not ideal for such tiny seats.
