Farmar scores 20 as UCLA beats Washington St.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) -- Jordan Farmar scored 20 points to help UCLA (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) beat Washington State 50-30 on Thursday night and remain

atop the Pacific-10 Conference in a battle between the top two

defensive teams in the league.

UCLA (20-4, 10-2 Pac-10) has won four in a row and recorded its

first 20-win season since 2001-02.

Washington State (10-10, 3-8) was coming off a big win over No.

16 Washington that swept the season series from the in-state rival.

However, after WSU beat Washington the first time, the Cougars lost

their next six games.

Washington State made only 14 of 51 (27.5 percent) baskets in

the game. Forward Robbie Cowgill was only 1-for-11 for the Cougars,

who suffered a season low in points scored.

Arron Afflalo added 12 points for the Bruins, who shot 45.2

percent and also posted a season low for points scored.

UCLA led 26-12 after an ugly first half that saw Washington

State make six of 23 field goals and not shoot a free throw. The

Bruins were 10-for-20, but also committed nine turnovers to keep

the Cougars from being completely routed.

Washington State scored only 17 points in the first half of the

first game against UCLA, their previous season low. They scored 10

points in one half against Oklahoma State last year.

The teams opened the second half by going a combined 2-for-15

from the field.

Farmar scored all four UCLA baskets in a 3-minute span to give

the Bruins a 36-18 lead with 10:13 left.

Cedric Bozeman's layup pushed UCLA's lead to 43-26 with 5:10

left.

In the first, UCLA jumped to a 14-0 lead, behind seven points by

Afflalo, as Washington State missed its first five shots while the

Bruins penetrated for layups. After 8½minutes of play, Washington

State trailed 18-2.

Washington State's season low in points was 50 against both

Oregon and Oregon State.

UCLA's season scoring low was 54 against Temple and they held

Delaware State to 37 points.

Derrick Low, Washington State's second-leading scorer, returned

to action after missing eight games with a broken foot.

Washington State leads the Pac-10 in defense at 57 points per

game, while UCLA gives up 60.

UCLA leads the series against Washington State 89-13, including

38-11 in Pullman. The Bruins have won 13 straight on the road

against WSU.

However, recent games have been close, including UCLA's 63-61

win earlier this year, when Kyle Weaver missed a layup at the

buzzer.
