LOS ANGELES (AP) -- UCLA was desperately looking for another

scorer after losing two straight games for the first time this

season.

But after trailing Oregon State at halftime, the 19th-ranked

Bruins relied on the same old pair.

Jordan Farmar scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half and

Arron Afflalo had 13 of his 20 in the second half in a 78-60

victory over Oregon State Thursday night, keeping the Bruins (No. 17 ESPN/USA Today; No. 19 AP) in a

first-place tie in the Pac-10.

UCLA trailed by double digits in the first half but went on a

20-0 run midway through the second and led by as many as 19 down

the stretch. The Bruins shot 75 percent (18-for-24) in the second

half.

"That's the most fun I've had playing as a Bruin in a long

time," Afflalo said of the run. "We came out of the locker room

playing selfless and focusing on what was important."

Afflalo and Farmar, the team's top two scorers on the season,

came out strong for the second half. Farmar missed all three of his

3-point attempts in the first half, but made all four in the

second. Afflalo went 1-for-3 from behind the arc in the first half,

and 3-for-4 in the second.

"It was a great second half," said UCLA coach Ben Howland. "I

can't wait to watch that again. We came out and played with

passion."

Farmar shot 8-for-13 from the field, and Afflalo went 6-for-11.

"They demonstrated why they are two of the elite guards in the

country," Oregon State coach Jay John said.

With the victory, the Bruins (21-6, 11-4) kept pace in the

Pac-10 with California, which beat Washington State earlier

Thursday. Both teams are a game ahead of No. 17 Washington.

The Bruins had played only two games in the two weeks before

Thursday's game and had lost both: to Southern California on Sunday

and to Washington on Feb. 11.

Howland said that gave his team a sense of urgency it might not

have had against the Beavers.

"We had lost two straight games, and we needed this one," he

said. "There was not even a remote thought of looking past this

team."

Nick DeWitz scored 14 and Marcel Jones had 12 points for the

Beavers (11-16, 4-12), who have lost eight of their last 10 games

since losing senior point guard Lamar Hurd to a groin injury.

Oregon State went to the free throw line just once during the

game.

"In all my years of coaching, I've never had a team with just

one free throw," John said. "For us to be successful, we have to

get to the free throw line."

The Bruins trailed by six at the half, but Farmar scored 11

points including three 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the

second-half, and Cedric Bozeman made a 3 to give UCLA a 50-49 lead

with 12:37 to play.

That began the 20-point run, capped by Afflalo's 3-pointer with

7:15 to play.

"In the second half, they shot us out of it," John said. "We

battled but couldn't match their scoring."

The win gave UCLA a season sweep over Oregon State and gave

third-year coach Howland his 50th victory as a Bruin.

Oregon State opened a double-digit lead in the first half when

Chris Stephens scored and DeWitz stole the inbounds pass and made a

layup, putting the Beavers up 24-14 with 6:18 to play in the first

half.

UCLA followed with a 10-2 run to pull within two, but Jones and

Jason Fontenet made 3-pointers in the final 1:13 to give Oregon

State a 32-26 halftime lead.
