Davidson Wildcats @ App State Mountaineers
Davidson 71, Appalachian St. 60
BOONE, N.C. (AP) -- Stephen Curry scored 38 points to lead Davidson to a 71-60 victory over Appalachian State in their Southern Conference season opener Monday night.
Curry was 14-for-27 for the Wildcats (3-2, 1-0 SoCon), hitting more shots than the other four starters combined, and just under the majority of Davidson's 29 field goals. His performance included a 9-for-16 effort from 3-point range, and his 26 points in the first half were two shy of the school record for a half set by Fred Hetzel.
Curry also set a record for most points scored in Appalachian State's Holmes Center.
Thomas Sander had 13 and Boris Meno scored 10 for Davidson, which shot just two free throws and made one.
Appalachian State (3-3, 0-1 SoCon) closed an early eight-point deficit to 19-16 with 10:58 left in the half on a 3-pointer by Kellen Brand. Davidson ended that rally and went on a 12-3 run in which Curry scored five points to give the Wildcats a 31-19 edge with 7:39 left in the half.
The Mountaineers trailed 42-28 at the half and by as much as 16 in the second half before Brand hit a pair of free throws with 8 minutes left to close to 55-49. Curry and Bryant Barr responded with 3-pointers to put the game away.
