Lamar Cardinals @ New Orleans Privateers
New Orleans 76, Lamar 65
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- New Orleans guard Bo McCalebb scored 22 points, including his 2000th career point, and freshman reserve Jaroslav Tyrna contributed 13 as the Privateers held off Lamar 76-65 on Wednesday.
McCalebb, a senior, went 8-of-16 from the field, and he and Tyrna held off a late Cardinal rally to help UNO (4-0) jump out to its best start since 2002.
McCalebb, the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, became the first player in school history to hit the 2,000-point mark. He reached it following a layup with 8:07 left in the first half.
James Parlow added 10 points, while Jacob Manning had a team-high nine rebounds.
New Orleans got the win without Kyndall Dykes, who was sidelined by a sprained ankle.
Kenny Dawkins paced Lamar (1-4) with 18 points, while Justin Nabors added 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Privateers, who were up 38-28 at halftime, went on a 10-0 run at the 16:36 mark of the second half to stretch their lead to 54-34 with 14:42 to play. The Cardinals managed to cut the deficit to 67-60 with 3:20 to go following a free throw by Lamar Sanders. But Tyrna iced it with a key 3-pointer with 2:55 left to push the margin to 70-60.
