SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Preston Medlin scored 24 points, and Utah State spoiled UTSA's first-ever Western Athletic Conference game Saturday with a 71-67 victory in the conference opener for both teams.
Medlin was 9 of 15 from the field, including three 3-pointers, as part of a 62 percent shooting effort for the Aggies (10-1). Spencer Butterfield added 14 points, and Jarred Shaw had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Jordan Sims scored 20 points, made six 3s and dished out five assists to lead the Roadrunners (4-7), and Kannon Burrage added 14 points.
Utah State went ahead for good, 31-29, on Medlin's jumper 3:50 before halftime. UTSA pulled within 61-60 on Burrage's basket with 4:51 to play, but the Aggies followed with a 10-3 run to put the game away.
The game was the first-ever meeting between the schools; UTSA fell to 0-3 all-time against teams from Utah, having previously lost to Utah and BYU.
