CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Trent Wiedeman had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Andrew Lawrence knocked down two free throws with 1 second left to lift the College of Charleston to a 67-65 victory over Western Carolina Wednesday night.
Trailing 65-58 with 1:10 remaining, Western Carolina's Trey Sumler hit a jumper, had a three-point play, then made a jumper and a layup to tie the game at 65-all with 4 seconds left before Lawrence's winning foul shots.
Adjehi Baru had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Lawrence and Anthony Stitt scored 12 points each for the Cougars (20-8, 12-4 Southern Conference), who have won eight of their past nine games.
One more victory will clinch a first-round bye in the Southern Conference tournament.
Sumler scored 24 points for the Catamounts (11-17, 8-8), who have lost two straight.
The Cougars trailed 20-11 in the first half but led 30-28 at halftime.
