Anderson leads TCU over Grambling State 98-75
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Kyan Anderson scored 17 consecutive points for TCU during a blistering first-half run and the Horned Frogs beat Grambling State 98-75 on Thursday night.
Anderson finished with 27 points. He also had five assists and three steals. It was the eighth 20-plus point game of his career.
TCU (7-3) won its third consecutive game heading into a Saturday rematch against Tulsa. Grambling State (1-5) had opened with four straight losses before beating Central Baptist College on Monday.
Anderson outscored Grambling State 15-5 during a run that pushed TCU's lead from 14-13 to 29-18 with 7:38 left in the first half. He made two 3-pointers plus a layup and a free throw to push TCU's lead to double digits. Anderson did it in a span of 3 minutes, 23 seconds.
Anderson started his 17-point scoring splurge with a basket for a 14-5 lead. But Grambling State was able to respond as Terry Rose and Remond Brown made 3-pointers to cut the Horned Frogs' lead to 14-13 with 11:01 left in the first half.
That's when Anderson answered Brown's 3-pointer with a jump shot and a 3-pointer and Grambling State couldn't find a way to slow him down.
TCU relied almost exclusively on its starting five for its point production. TCU starters scored all but 25 of the Horned Frogs' 98 points. It was the Horned Frogs' highest scoring game since they lost to San Diego State 98-92 in overtime on March 3, 2012.
Not only did Anderson have another standout game, but backcourt mate Michael Williams had a career-high 14 points. Williams made all three of his 3-pointers and handed out six assists.
Horned Frogs center Karviar Shepherd also had his second consecutive career-best game with 12 points and eight rebounds. And while Anderson was on his scoring flurry, Shepherd set the tone on the defensive end with two of his four blocked shots as TCU held Grambling State to 25 percent shooting in the first half.
A fourth starter, forward Brandon Parrish, had 11 points. Jarvis Ray, TCU's other starter, had nine points and ended Anderson's 17-consecutive-point run with a breakaway dunk to give TCU a 31-18 lead with 7:19 left in the first half. Anderson trailed right behind Ray as he put down a two-handed slam.
TCU built its lead to as much as 32 points at 88-56 with 5:12 left in the game when Christian Gore made his second 3-pointer.
Antwan Scott led Grambling State with 13 points. He was 3 for 5 on 3-pointers. Rose added 12 points and Brown had 10 for the Tigers.
