Stetson holds off late Bethune-Cookman run, 56-52
DELAND, Fla. -- Willie Green scored 18 points as Stetson held off a late charge by Bethune-Cookman to win 56-52 on Tuesday night.
Stetson (1-9) was up 41-23 at halftime, but only scored 15 second-half points. The Hatters made 15 of 29 shots in the first half and only 5 of 22 after the intermission.
Troy Simmons' bucket pulled Bethune-Cookman within one at 51-50 with 2:22 left. Stetson's Green made two free throws a minute later to extend its lead to three points. After a Bethune-Cookman basket, Green answered again and Brian Pegg made 1 of 2 free throws with 3 seconds left to seal the win.
Raymone Andrews had 11 points for Stetson and Kentwan Smith added 10.
Clemmye Owens had 12 points for Bethune-Cookman (2-8), Tony Kynard had 11 and Barry Smith added 10 points, 11 rebounds.
It was Corey Williams' first career win as head coach of Stetson.
