American U atop conference; 64-44 win over Lehigh

WASHINGTON -- Darius Gardner scored 17 points and Tony Wroblicky added 15 points and 12 rebounds as American University beat Lehigh 64-44 on Wednesday.

Jesse Reed had 14 and John Schoof 12, on four 3-pointers, for American U (15-9, 11-2 Patriot League). The Eagles are tied atop the conference with Boston University.

Lehigh (13-13, 6-7) was led by Austin Price with 20 points and no other Mountain Hawk scored over six points. Lehigh made just 15 of 43 shots (34.9 percent).

Leading 27-20 at halftime, American opened the second half on a 14-3 run for a 41-23 lead. Lehigh wouldn't go away quietly as it went on 8-0 run to get within 46-36 with 6:28 left. But Reed and Schoof responded with five quick points and American led by double-digits the rest of the way.

American forced 21 turnovers, 14 coming off steals. Gardner had five takeaways and Schoof four.
