Beamon gives Manhattan victory over Columbia 71-70
NEW YORK -- George Beamon's putback and free throw with a half-second remaining lifted Manhattan to a 71-70 victory over Columbia on Tuesday night.
Trailing 70-68 with 4 seconds left, Manhattan's Michael Alvarado was fouled attempting a 3-pointer. After making one of the first two free throws, Alvarado missed the third intentionally. Beamon got the rebound and put in an off-balance shot and was fouled as the buzzer sounded. After a replay review, the clock was reset to 0.5. Beamon then made the free throw.
Columbia (1-1) missed a tip at game's end.
Beamon scored 28 points and is now No. 10 on Manhattan's (2-0) career scoring list with 1,330 points. Shane Richards made six of eight 3-point attempts, finishing with 19. The Jaspers made 10 of 12 3-pointers to Columbia's four of 13.
Columbia (1-1) got 23 points from Grant Mullins and 11 from Cory Osetkowski.
There were 75 free throws attempted.
