Iona rolls over Monmouth 89-70
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- A.J. English scored 21 points and added 13 assists as Iona won its ninth consecutive game, topping Monmouth 89-70 Friday night.
Tre Bowman scored 23 points to lead the first-place Gaels (17-8, 14-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Iona jumped to a 42-26 halftime lead and continued to roll in the second half.
Tied at 7 early in the contest, Iona went on a 15-5 run for a 22-12 lead, and Monmouth could not recover as the Gaels held a double-digit lead for most of the game.
Isaiah Williams and Sean Armand scored 13 apiece for Iona, and Mike Poole added 11 as all of Iona's starters reached double figures.
Deon Jones scored 16 points to lead the Hawks (10-16, 4-11). Khalil Brown added 13. Monmouth shot 50.8 percent from the field, but committed 21 turnovers compared with eight for the Gaels.
