TOWSON, Md. -- Sandy Underwood scored 22 points to lead West Alabama to its first win over a Division I team in 33 years with a 77-67 victory over Abilene Christian in the Battle 4 Atlantis Mainland tournament on Friday night.
Jarell Byrd had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Mychal Bester added 11 points and nine rebounds for West Alabama (2-2). Underwood shot 8 of 13 from the field and 2 of 4 from 3-point range for 22 points.
West Alabama was 30 of 33 from the free throw line and outrebounded Abilene Christian 35-29. The last time the Tigers beat a Division I opponent was their 68-60 win over Samford on Nov. 28, 1980.
Harrison Hawkins led West Abiliene (2-7) with 21 points, while Parker Wentz added 15 points one 5-of-10 3-point shooting.
The Tigers will continue in the tournament on Saturday against The Citadel and Abilene Christian will face Towson.
