Wofford Terriers @ Georgia Bulldogs
Djurisic, Williams lead Georgia past Wofford
ATHENS, Ga. -- Nemanja Djurisic scored 12 points, Donte' Williams added 11 and Georgia beat Wofford 72-52 Friday night in both teams' season opener.
Spencer Collins finished with 11 points and Lee Skinner had 10 for Wofford.
Georgia coach Mark Fox said he wanted his team to spread the scoring around after last season's leading scorer, Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, left for the NBA.
The Bulldogs were coming off a 15-17 season, their third losing record in four years under Fox, but they never trailed after Kenny Gaines' jumper made it 14-12 at the 10:03 mark of the first.
After Justin Gordon's basket cut the lead to two at the 6:25 mark, Georgia outscored Wofford 19-2 to take a 39-20 halftime lead.
Gaines scored eight points over that span, including a tip-in that he scored on the right side of the rim after missing a layup in traffic.
Caldwell-Pope, who was drafted No. 8 overall by the Detroit Pistons, accounted for nearly one third of Georgia's scoring. No other returner averaged more than 7.9.
Fox's starting lineup consisted of Djurisic, Williams and Marcus Thornton at forward with Gaines and Charles Mann at guard.
Gaines scored 10 points and six rebounds. Mann had seven points and three assists.
Georgia, which had 24 turnovers in an exhibition win over North Carolina-Pembroke on Monday, cut down their miscues to nine against Wofford.
Wofford junior guard Karl Cochran, who started 30 games and led the team in scoring last season, had nine points in a reserve role. He didn't score until midway through the second half, cutting the lead to 50-27.
The Terriers, of the Southern Conference, went 13-19 last season.
Georgia's next game is Friday at home against Georgia Tech. Wofford hosts Emory and Henry on Monday.
