Stony Brook tops UMBC 72-53 to keep pace in AmEast
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Steve Pikiell became the winningest coach in Stony Brook men's basketball history with the Seawolves' 72-53 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Wednesday night.
Jameel Warney scored 18 points, Carson Puriefoy 12 and Dave Coley 10 as Stony Brook (19-8, 11-2) remained tied for first place with Vermont in the America East with two games to play. Ahmad Walker had 10 rebounds. The Seawolves held a 38-22 rebounding advantage.
Pikiell now has 139 victories at Stony Brook, passing Joe Castigle, who coached the Seawolves from 1984-91 at the Division III level.
Brett Roseboro scored a career-high 20 points and had nine rebounds for the Retrievers (9-18, 5-9).
The game was tied when Stony Brook finished the first half outscoring UMBC 19-7 to lead 35-23.
The Seawolves went on an 11-1 run to go up 22 points with 4:47 left.
Stony Brook extended its winning streak over UMBC to 13 games
