Hampton defeats Norfolk State 79-73 in overtime
NORFOLK, Va. -- Du'Vaughn Maxwell had 11 points and scored a key tip-in shot with 31 seconds to play in regulation to help Hampton to a 79-73 overtime victory against Norfolk State on Saturday night.
Jamel Fuentes' free throw gave Norfolk State a 66-64 lead with 54 seconds remaining before Maxwell scored to send it into overtime.
Jervon Pressley scored four points and Brian Darden added three to give Hampton a 73-66 lead to open overtime. Marese Phelps scored and Fuentes made a free throw to pull the Spartans within four, 73-69 with 2:13 left. Maxwell's jumper pushed Hampton's lead back to six, and Deron Powers and Darden both made two free throws apiece to seal it for the Pirates.
Hampton (14-11, 9-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) is in second place and holds a half-game lead over Norfolk State (14-11, 8-3).
Pendarvis Williams scored 18 points to lead Norfolk State.
