Western Carolina beats Georgia Southern 68-67
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Trey Sumler scored twice in the final minute to help Western Carolina hang on for a 68-67 victory at Georgia Southern on Saturday.
Sumler hit a jumper with 58 seconds left that put the Catamounts up 66-61 and another to extend the lead to 68-64 with 3.4 seconds left.
Jelani Hewitt made a deep 3 for Georgia Southern with 1.1 seconds left, but the Eagles were unable to get the ball back.
Brandon Boggs gave the Catamounts the lead for good at 50-48 on a jumper with 7:50 left. Boggs finished with 13 points and James Sinclair led Western Carolina (10-8, 3-0 Southern Conference) with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Hewitt paced the Georgia Southern (8-9, 1-1) with 23 points. Tre Bussey added 14 points as Angel Matias and Brian Holmes scored 11 each.
Bussey made two free throws to bring Georgia Southern within 66-64 with 40 seconds left.
